Today the students wrote about their favorite part of Halloween or their favorite part of school. Once they stated their opinion, they were supposed to give two reasons to support their opinion. Here are a few sample papers.

The students worked really hard creating a friendly monster. Then they had time to write many sentences using adjectives to describe their monsters. The students worked really hard on their creative, monster stories.

Our Buddies

On Tuesday we had time to get together with our 5th grade buddies. The students enjoyed working with their buddies.

Our Caterpillars

Yesterday we watched one caterpillar spin and wiggle and make a chrysalis. Two of the caterpillars were hanging like a J. The last caterpillar was still crawling around a bit when we left at the end of the day. This morning they were all in a chrysalis and I moved them to a butterfly container. We're anxiously awaiting our butterflies!

Comprehension Strategy

The students have been learning about making inferences. I read the story Erandi's Braids today and the students used their Activotes to text in their answers. The students had to infer what Erandi was thinking and feeling.

Editing our Writing

We've been reviewing what makes a sentence complete and where capital letter belong. I've been meeting with individual students this week to help them edit their work. When their stories come home, you'll notice some check marks at the beginning of some lines so they know where to look and find any errors. The check marks might represent a backwards letter, capital letter, end mark or spelling error. Some students can do this independently and others students need more help and support.

Two Digit Addition with Regrouping

Today we started using unifix cubes so students can begin learning to add two digit numbers. They are getting really good at setting up the problem and solving the problem with the cubes.

StoryKit Writing

The students have been using the StoryKit app on the iPads. They've been choosing a photo from the iPads and telling about our trip to the zoo. When they finish, I'll send a link so the parents can see their writing.

Science News

We reviewed Chapter 3 so the students will be ready for the test on Friday. Your child should have brought home their science books to study on Wednesday and Thursday evening.  Also, we've been learning about fossils and how fossils help scientists learned about life long ago.  Olivia and Lauren brought in a fossil to share with the class. The students also made "fossils" out of play dough too.

We will be reviewing on Wednesday and Thursday for the science test on Friday. I'll send home the science books on Wednesday for your child to review at home. Check out a few of our food chains.

Xtramath News!

Congratulations to Shaadi! She finished the six second addition program a few weeks ago and started on the six second subtraction. I'm so proud of her because she just finished subtraction! Shaadi is now onto a new level - three second addition!  I'm so happy for her!

Some students have had trouble getting onto Xtramath.org at home.  If you're child is having trouble try clicking the classroom tab and entering our class code: R36JC8AA. Then your child can choose his/her name and enter the 4 digit pass code in their take home folder.
