Junior Achievement

Mrs. Nicastro has been teaching the Junior Achievement lessons. The students are learning about communities. They learned about businesses and jobs in a community. They made "donuts" as they learned about production. They voted on a new business in the community. The recycling center had the most votes. Today they learned about how money moves in a community.

They have learned a lot! Thanks so much to Mrs. Nicastro.

Book Clubs

The students have started "book clubs". I put the book choices out and the students were able to choose their 1st, 2nd or 3rd choice. Then I divided them up into groups by their first or second choice. Sometimes the "book club" reads a chapter or two and discusses it on their own or sometimes their "book club" meets and reads with me. They students are doing great leading their book discussions.

Rock, Rocks and More Rocks!

The students love sharing their rock collections!

Poetry

The students have been writing poems, poems, and more poems! They have been trying to put in repeating lines, line breaks and comparisons to make their poems stronger. I've been very impressed with their writing. We had a little "museum walk" so students could see and read all the great poems! We will continue to work on poetry next week before wrapping up the unit.

Measuring in Math

The students have been working hard as they learn to measure in inches, feet and yards. Today the students learned what would be the best tool to measure. They had to decide between a ruler, yard stick or measuring tape. The students will have math homework and some of the items they're expected to measure are difficult. Please just have your child measure what they have available.

Social Studies Test - Tomorrow!

We reviewed Unit 5 in class yesterday and again today. You can review pages 274-276 in the Social Studies book with your child. I sent home the vocabulary words tonight too. Your child needs to know two leaders who helped fight for American Independence. They need to know that Thomas Edison was an inventor. Also they need to know ways that Jamestown and Plymouth are they same and know one difference. We tried to use the Activotes but technology failed us so we used our dry erase boards to show our answers.

Time and Money

Today the students learned how to tell time to five minute intervals. They practiced with the Judy Clocks today and will continue tomorrow because this is a tough concept. During math stations the students love playing Money Bags! They have a lot of fun as they practice counting money! The person with the most money at the end of the game wins. It's great when kids have fun practicing!

Clocks, Clocks, Clocks

The students have been learning to tell time to the hour, half-hour and quarter-hour. This is a tricky concept for some students so extra practice at home would be beneficial!
