Math Test Tomorrow

We've been working hard learning to subtracting 2-digit number with regrouping.  We've practiced a lot over the last several weeks.  We've practiced with fun games too.  Keep practicing the subtraction facts with your child too!

Writing Like a Scientist!

The students have been working hard!  The students made a follow-up experiment by changing one part of the first experiment.  Some groups actually changed a few things.  The students had to write a question and make a hypothesis.  Then they wrote their procedure pages and then they got their supplies and tried out their experiment.  The next day the students wrote their conclusion pages that told whether their hypothesis was right or not.  Today the students tried to add more science information in their conclusions.  Tomorrow the students will be looking over the Information Writing Checklist and try to revise their lab booklets.  Students will also be making a writing goal too.  Here's a video of some of the students' experiments:  Writing Like a Scientist Video

Rocks, Rocks and more Rocks

We are learning about our Earth.  Yesterday we learned about rocks and minerals.  The students enjoyed getting a close up look at the different kinds of rocks!  We talked about how rocks are different sizes, shapes, colors, and textures.  Many students want to bring in their own little rock collections to share with the class.  That's great!  We're looking forward to seeing all the interesting rocks!

Science Writing

The students are learning to write like scientists. Yesterday we wrote a question and made an hypothesis.  Then we wrote the procedure and conclusion page.  Our question was "Will the little car go farther off the ramp on the carpet or the bare floor?"  The students then wrote their hypothesis or what they think the answer might be.  Then I set up the ramp and I tried it out and the car went farther on the bare floor just like everyone thought!  Then the students wrote a conclusion to explain their thinking. Today, we look at some real science books and how they wrote up their procedures. Then the students set up their own ramp and tried it out with their own toy cars and rewrote their own procedure page.  They included a "You will need" section, labeled the pictures they drew, and numbered and wrote out the steps so someone else could repeat the procedure!  They sure worked hard!

Buddy Activity - 7 Habits of Happy Kids

On Wednesday, we worked with our 5th grade buddies and talked about the 2nd habit - Begin with the End in Mind/Have a Plan.  We discussed realistic goals versus unrealistic goals.  Then everyone wrote a realistic goal.  Several students shared their goals.  Ask your child about his/her goal.

Celebrating Another Success!

Caroline finished Addition in Xtramath!  Congratulations Caroline and keep up the good work as you move onto sutraction!

Social Studies - Unit 2

The students have been learning about landforms, regions and natural resources.  We've talked about weather and climate too.  We reviewed for the Unit 2 test today and the test will be on Friday.  We'll review a bit on Wednesday and Thursday too.  Your child can review at home this week and return his/her social studies book on Friday.

Subtracting 2 - digit numbers

The students have been working hard this week learning to subtract 2 digit number with regrouping.  We've been using unifix cubes so students understand what's really happening when they subtract.  A few students tried solving the problems with paper pencil today and hopefully tomorrow more students will be ready!

Math News

The students are really good at adding two-digit numbers with regrouping and they did great on the test today.  On Monday, the students will begin learning to subtract two-digit numbers with regrouping.  We'll start by using the unifix cubes to show what's happening as we subtract.
Also, the timed tests are little more difficult this quarter.  The timed tests have a mix of easy and hard facts.  Most students are doing great with the addition timed tests and many students are struggling with the subtraction facts.  Practicing just 5 minutes each day can really help increase their speed on the timed tests.

Landforms, Continent Maps, and Regions

The students worked on continent maps last week and labeled all the oceans too.  Hopefully they brought home the Continent Song and sang it to you!  This week, the students made landform booklets.  We drew hills, mountains, valleys, plains, islands, and peninsulas.  The students also drew lakes, rivers, and oceans to show the different kinds of water we have here on Earth!  It was lots of fun and their drawings are quite creative. Today we talked about regions.  The students are learning a lot about places near and far!  We had one Flat Stanley return from his vacation and we're looking forward to learning about all sorts of different places.

Service Project with the Rams

The students worked hard today as they made cards for service men and women veterans.  The Rams along with the Red Cross and Edward Jones organized the project.  Luckily the Rams mascot stopped by to visit!

Finally the zoo video is finished!  Enjoy!  Click here:  Fun at the Zoo Video

Halloween Fun!

We sure had fun on Halloween!  I made a little movie to show all the fun we had.  Enjoy the movie!

StoryKit

Let the writing begin on StoryKit!  The students took many pictures when we went to the zoo.  Now they are using StoryKit on the iPads and writing about our trip.  They have great photos to go with their writing.  About half the class has started their zoo stories on StoryKit and we're hoping this upcoming week, most students will finish their stories.  As they finish, we'll email you the story!
