Poetry
The students have been writing poems all week. We've been talking about taking an ordinary object and looking at it in different ways. Today we looked in our Tiny Topic Notebooks and looked at the ideas we wrote about earlier in the year. Some students took a topic like soccer, football, or gymnastics and wrote a poem about it. The students have been writing many poems. Here are a few:

Solid Figures
In math, we are learning about solid figures: rectangular prism, cube, pyramid, sphere, cylinder, and cone. We've been counting faces, vertices, and edges. We'll be finishing up this unit tomorrow as we review and our Chapter 19 test will be on Friday.
Poetry Unit
We've started our Poetry Writing Unit! We started looking at seashells in different ways and the students started taking notes. They looked at their notes and wrote poems. Then we talked about rewriting our poems with line breaks to make it sound more like a poem.

Writing
The past two weeks the students have enjoyed "free choice" writing during our writing time. We've been reading books from one of my favorite authors - Patricia Polacco. The students could continue and write their opinions about favorite books or they could write an informational text or a personal narrative. After spring break, our writing unit will be poetry. The students brought home their free choice writing today and their published piece from the their opinion writing will be coming home tomorrow.
Math Update
The students enjoyed using the tangrams and pattern blocks to show what they've been learning with plane shapes. We've reviewed today and they will have a math test tomorrow morning. After spring break, the students will be learning about solid figures. The students enjoyed our graphing activity today too! Conrad brought a box of Lucky Charms and each student had a scoop of cereal and graphed their charms. After looking at everyone's data, we know that there are more rainbow charms in a box of Lucky Charms. The students also practiced other problem solving questions with our Lucky Charms data. A special thanks to Conrad and his mom! The students really enjoyed eating the cereal after we were finished!

More Junior Achievement
Our last lesson today was about how money moves in the neighborhood. The students listened to the song about how the quarter moved through the neighborhood when people paid for the things they needed or wanted.
Junior Achievement
Yesterday the students learned about making decisions for their community. The students learned about voting for a mayor. Each mayor wants to bring a different business to the community. After talking about each of the businesses then the students voted for mayor.
Math - Plane Shapes
We've been learning about plane shapes: circle, square, triangle, rectangle, hexagon, trapezoid, parallelogram and rhombus. We've been sorting shapes by sides, angles, square corners and vertices too. Using pattern blocks today, the students put squares together to make rectangles, triangles together trapezoids and hexagons, and parallelograms to make a hexagon. At the math stations, the students are using tangrams to make pictures and using the iPads to show what they've learned using pattern blocks and Educreations. We will finish this chapter tomorrow and have a test on Friday morning.

Graphing
The students have been learning about bar graphs and line graphs. They've also learned how to put points on a grid. Today, we walked around the school to look at all the decorated doors and we graphed our favorite decorated Dr. Seuss door. The students worked on line graphs today. Here's a few picture of what they were doing at their math stations.
